Questions And Answers Of Laser Hair Removal

- 18 January, 2005 -

What is the advantage of using a laser? Lasers are precise instruments that can be adjusted to the exact parameters that will specifically disable the hair follicle. The laser uses a wide beam that treats many hairs at once instead of treating hair-by-hair like electrolysis. Because of this, large areas such as legs, arms, or backs can be treated in a short amount of time. Results will last far longer than with tweezing, waxing, shaving, chemical depilation or other temporary treatments. How does the laser remove hair? The laser emits a very specific light beam that is absorbed by the pigment located in the hair follicle. The laser is pulsed, or "turned on," for a fraction of a second. The duration of the pulses has been carefully determined so that the energy will be absorbed by the hair follicle to disable it, but no excess heat is transferred to the surrounding skin, resulting in safe and effective hair removal. How long will it take? Because the laser treats many hairs at a time, facial areas (lip, chin, etc.) can be treated in 5-10 minutes. Small body areas (underarms, bikini, etc.) take less than 15 minutes. Larger body areas (full back, legs, arms, etc.) usually take about 30 to 60 minutes depending on the size of the area. Does it hurt? While some areas can be more sensitive than others, most individuals describe the feeling as a slight stinging or tingling sensation. The sensation stops once the lasing stops. In addition, S na MedSpas uses the new Smart Cool. The Smart Cool is an air cooler that blows a continuous stream of cold air (4 degree Celsius) on the skin before, during and after the laser pulse. This minimizes any discomfort. If needed, clients can also use S na’s proprietary topical anesthetic, Sonacaine. How many treatments do you need? The laser works by disabling hairs that are in their active growth cycle at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter their growth cycles at different times, an average of five treatments will be necessary to disable all the follicles in a given area. What happens to the skin after the treatment? Within several minutes of the treatment, the treated area may become slightly red. This reaction subsides within a few minutes to a few hours, and the area returns to normal. Since the laser does not burn or cut the skin in any way, no bandages are necessary. You are able to reapply your make-up, return to work, and continue with your normal daily activities. Is laser hair removal permanent? The lasers used at S na MedSpa have received FDA approval for "permanent hair reduction." Studies show that after an average of five treatments, most clients no longer have a need to continue treatment. S na MedSpa also uses a patent-pending process called the S na Concept. The S na Concept ensures we are targeting active hairs at the right time of the hair growth cycle. This proprietary information, coupled with the lasers we use, is what leads to optimal success levels for most clients. Who delivers the treatments and what are their qualifications? Local S na MedSpas are overseen by a medical director, who also is a physician, and treatments are performed by licensed nurses. Corporately, each nurse must also pass a certification process developed by our national medical director. What type of laser technology do you use? S na uses different types of lasers, depending on the needs of the client. S na lasers are the most advanced and, because S na has multiple lasers, it can safely and effectively treat a broad range of skin types and hair color.
