One man's trash, they say, is another man's treasure. If you have an item that's in good shape but for which you have no use, a popular way to sell it is an online auction. "I have been selling on eBay for about four years," said local seller Elizabeth Mays. "I started out selling things out of my closet to raise money for piano lessons and gymnastics lessons and that sort of thing for my family." But not everyone has the time, energy, or computer skills to sell effectively online. "We have tried to sell things on eBay," area resident Mark Williams said. "We are much more successful at buying things on eBay than selling them." Now people in our area have another option: the Snappy Auctions store on Wilmington Island. It's basically like a consignment shop, with a worldwide customer base in the millions. How's that possible? It's right on the store's sign: "Drop off your stuff, and we'll sell it on eBay." Elizabeth Mays owns the new franchise in the Kroger Shopping Plaza off Johnny Mercer Blvd. on Wilmington Island. "Almost everybody has things in their house they don't use any more," she said. "They know they have value, but they don't know how to get that value out of them. So we encourage people to bring in their stuff and we will sell it for them. Help them clean out their closets and put a little money in their wallet." For a percentage, the folks at Snappy Auctions handle all the details. They'll write the listing--including digital photos of your item--and help you find the right asking price. The end result: a professional online auction that sellers hope will fetch good prices. "I think that something like this company, Snappy Auctions, will be able to sell something with more vigor, with a more snappy image, and bring a better price for both me and for them," said Williams. It's a local storefront for a worldwide market. They say they'll sell just about anything--even automobiles--if they can reasonably expect to get at least $50 for it.
