On Wednesday, August 16, the Rita's Ices, Cones, Shakes and Other Cool Stuff located at 225 Newark Pompton Turnpike in Pequannock will hold a fundraiser for Steven Domalewski, the Wayne 13 year-old who's heart stopped briefly when he was hit in the chest by a line drive during a recent baseball game. From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. the store will donate 30% of the profits from all sales to a fund set up by the Domalewski Family. While pitching in a Wayne P.A.L game in early June, Steven was hit by a line drive to his chest. The impact occurred between heartbeats causing a rare condition called commotio cordis. Steven fell into a coma. Doctors treating Steven say he is now in a "mild coma". According to Dr. Philip De Fina, who is leading the team from the International Brian Research Foundation, some of Steven's brain systems are coming back, but he is at the beginning of a long process. "This is a heartbreaking story that would bring anyone to tears," said Michael Simineri, owner of the Pequannock Rita's. "Besides raising money, we want to show the family that the community is behind them in their time of need. which is impossible for anyone to imagine." Among those participating in Wednesday's event will be Jazmine Fenlator of Wayne, Rider University's 2006 Female Athlete of The Year. Fenlator, who is an All-East performer in several track and field events, works at Rita's as an "All Star closer" while on break from college. She was Rider's first ECAC Champion, winning the discus in 2005. She enters her senior year with six MAAC gold medals, the most ever by a Rider female field performer. .Jazmine has a bright future in the next Olympic games. She will be at the Ritas store during the fundraiser, discussing with youngsters her story about how see has followed her dreams and set personal goals for herself, both inside and outside of sports. She will surely inspire young athletes patronizing Ritas during this important fundraising event for Steven Domalewski. NJ Rock radio 105.5 will also be behind this fundraiser, with a VAN RUN on site at the store, and announcing the fundraiser event, live on the air. "We should have an outstanding turnout for this fundraiser, with the PAL and WDHA radio promoting the fundraiser event at my Rita's store, and Jazmine as our local celebrity" said Mr. Simineri. "I can think of no better cause, as the money will be put towards a fund set up for Stevens medical and rehabilitation treatments."
