Orlando - 15 May, 2005 -
When Marlin Bexley peers out into the parking lot that serves as the landscape of his Just-A-Buck dollar store in Orlando, he never gets tired of the view. Cars, rows and rows of them, stare directly back at him -- a beacon of commercial bliss. Sharing a shopping center with a CVS pharmacy, a Winn Dixey and a city post office, it gets like this quite often. There is never a shortage of customers pouring in and around Bexley's place of business. Yes, these are good times for Bexley, a Sorrento resident who just opened his second Just-A-Buck in the city, located on 7342 Curry Ford Road. Since opening on April 15th, business has boomed at his store, bringing in sales that have surprised even Bexley himself. "We have really struck a chord here," said Bexley, who opened Florida's first Just-ABuck last December at the Circuit City Plaza on 77 Good Homes Road. "I knew we had a great opportunity to be successful at this location, but the results have surpassed that. People have really connected with us." -- more -- Just-A-Buck, Inc.: Bexley opens second Just-A-Buck in Orlando -- 2 Set on 5,200 sq. ft., Bexley's Just-A-Buck stands out from many of the other dollar stores found in Orlando. The stereotypes of ill-maintenance and disrepair that are so often associated with dollar stores have no place here -- making Bexley's Just-A-Buck franchises a welcome departure. "On our opening day, four women were speaking together and Spanish, commenting how amazing the store looked," said Bexley. "I couldn't understand every word but I got the big picture. I knew for sure that they were impressed when they began taking out their cell phones to alert friends that we had opened. It was a nice feeling." Bexley isn't fluent in the Spanish language a potentially imposing obstacle for a business situated in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood. But Bexley was prepared, hiring a completely bilingual staff. Bexley was also aided by name recognition, noting that a healthy part of the population in the community are previous natives New York or New Jersey, two of Just-A-Buck's largest markets. "People recognize the Just-A-Buck brand and they know what to expect," said Bexley. Priding itself on offering the widest range of high-quality merchandise at the ultimate in low cost, the award-winning Just-A-Buck chain has enjoyed remarkable growth over the last two years. With locations in California, Connecticut, Florida, Louisiana, Maine, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Puerto Rico and Tennessee, Just-A-Buck has 44 stores with multiple new locations set to open in the coming months. Just-A-Buck was recently named as the number one dollar store franchise in the country in Entrepreneur magazine's "Franchise 500" listing. -- more -- Just-A-Buck, Inc.: Bexley opens second Just-A-Buck in Orlando -- 3 The dollar store is becoming a major player in the retail industry. According to a recent Nielsen study, 62 percent of American households shopped at a dollar store, up from 52 percent in 1999. That nearly matched the growth rate for supercenters, the fastestgrowing store category. Just-A-Buck's expansion into Florida is more evidence of the growing trend. The Orlando Just-A-Buck locations offer a wide array of merchandise including giftware, houseware, party supplies, helium balloons, health and beauty supplies, hardware, pet supplies, cleaners, toys and more. There are additional sections for greeting cards and seasonal items. Looking to the future, Bexley believes his newest Just-A-Buck location will continue to thrive. "People are always going to come back to a store that provides high quality at an unbeatable price," said Bexley. "We are able to offer a combination of factors that our competition simply cannot match."
