With warm Caribbean spirit, Yonkers welcomed its first Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill during an exciting grand opening celebration attended by the city’s mayor, area officials, company executives and about 100 exuberant customers who danced in the street. Mayor Phil Amicone congratulated Vincent and Novelette Clarke, the franchise owners, during a live radio broadcast on Irie Jam Radio and a later address during the June 5 event. Referring to the many immediate and extended Clarke family members who were at the store to show support, he recognized that success could be achieved through a strong sense of family. Lowell Hawthorne, president and CEO of Golden Krust, also congratulated the couple, saying their achievement embodied Golden Krust’s commitment to excellence. The Clarkes thanked their friends and customers, and specially recognized their staff. The employees posed for pictures with Amicone, who praised the Clarke’s diligence in establishing their 96-98 New Main Street store. He noted that if Yonkers residents had appetites like his, the Clarkes’ success and longevity would be assured. Amicone then cut the ribbon to declare the store officially open, and the party the hallmark of Golden Krust’s annual Summer Heatwave customer appreciation series was underway. A multicultural crowd of about 100 old and new customers feasted on complimentary Golden Krust jerk chicken, cocktail patties and cake, and beverages provided by Squeez’R. They then danced the latest reggae moves to music supplied by the Irie Jam crew. “Mister Krust,” Golden Krust’s new mascot, had the crowd particularly the children screaming in delight as he joined the dancing, demonstrating the “lightening,” “thunderclap,” “shankle dip” and “tambourine.” The debut of the dreadlocked, yellow patty-shaped figure who wore a red, yellow and gold tam, met with the approval of the entire crowd. Mr. Krust left the party early to attend ribbon-cutting ceremonies at two Golden Krust stores in the Bronx, but the celebration continued until 6 p.m. The Yonkers store opened last winter.
